Automated Art

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Iannis Xenakis, a pioneer of stochastic music and collaborator of Le Corbusier, the Xenakis Days were held at Kunsthaus Zurich on May 28-29, 2022.

Xenakis, a pioneer in New Music, transformed composition by applying stochastic theory, using mathematical probabilities to shape sound masses and glissandi. In the 1960s, he developed stochastic synthesis, an innovative algorithm for computer-based sound generation. Blending science and art, Xenakis viewed music as a formal system for crafting sound through mathematical principles.

VISUAL

For the Xenakis Days, a visual appearance was created that focuses on the unique composition of the music while emphasising its connection with philosophy, architecture and engineering. The design of the flyers, brochures and the website was carefully designed to convey this connection on a visual level.

To reflect the complexity and innovation of Xenakis' music, the design incorporates modern, direct elements. The bold typography and strokes, reminiscent of architectural and engineering forms, highlight the technical sophistication of his work. Philosophical depth is added through the use of paintings, while strong, high-contrast colors evoke his influence by Le Corbusier.
